This Should Be My Attitude April 19, 2009

At home I am free. I can set my own schedule. I can read. I can learn. I can grow. I can develop a skill. I can do what I want. I create an atmosphere and build an environment– one that is perfectly suited to my family. Home is a good base for acts of compassion and service. Neither my creativity nor my intelligence should be stifled by homemaking. On the contrary, I think being busy at home gives me a huge range of opportunities, possibilities, responsibilities, and joys, not the least of which is playing the largest role of anyone in my children’s lives. This job has eternal importance.   From High Desert Home

and this from the same place

Life at home should be lovely. It should be relatively peaceful. We should have time to stop what we’re doing, to listen, to look our loved ones in the eye, to smile and laugh, to care, to pay attention to one another. We should have time for spiritual contemplation and prayer even as we go about our business. Pray without ceasing. Blessedly, the unhurried daily routines and rituals of housework and living together as a family are perfect for this. They are a gift. Our hands are busy, our minds are free, our hearts are available.

Organizing Tee Shirts April 6, 2009

This is a very clever way to keep order to t-shirts in your drawers.  The link is a photo looking down into the drawer.  The blue thing in the front are metal bookends painted blue.  When you want to get a t-shirt out, loosen the bookend a bit, then slide it back in tighter.  When you want to put more in, loosen it some and add your shirts.  I am going to try this in my son’s drawer.  Check it out here.
I just tried this in my drawer with some of my tank tops and I didn’t need a metal bookend.  Will try this with my son’s stuff before I go search for a bookend.
Update, did this in my son’s drawer and didn’t need a bookend.  I believe this is working for me!  I love it because you can go right to the shirt you want rather than rifling through the stack to find the one you want.

5 Simple Things To Start My Day March 24, 2009

If I understand correctly, the challenge for this week at http://www.tammysrecipes.com/node/3272 in her Making Your Home a Haven series is to list 5 Things You Will Do Each Morning to get the day off to a great start.  My 5 are as follows:

1.  Wake up Rob and feed all fish

2.  Brush teeth and get completely ready (shower, dressed, hair and makeup done)

3.  Eat a healthy breakfast

4.  Set timer for a half hour and when it rings, DO TWO.

5.  Review calendar for upcoming events, committments and tasks.

Stainless steel and glass July 30, 2008

I have found a few stainless steel glasses that are working for me.  I got them a WalMart.  I don’t know who makes them but they have a plastic surround that you can hold on to so the glass isn’t too cold or hot.  I got the last two they had; hopefully they will get more.  I also found one at Goodwill.

I’m still on the using glass jars kick.  I’ve purchased a few large glass jars with screw on lids at WalMart to keep our cereal and crackers in.  I’m trying to get away from having all these boxes around with varying amounts of food in them and being more in control of when my cardboard recycling amounts are created.

I think I just realized I’m trying to control what I can control – babysteps.  Perhaps if I can control the small things I can get control of some of my larger issues.  I am finding that it is what works for me.

Housekeeping Helps July 22, 2008

I previously wrote about my lack of interest in housekeeping skills.  I have thought about how I can implement a better, more organized system into my life without it being overbearing and making me resentful.  I know I a big baby.  I intend to write up a list of things to do in each room, laminate it and check them off as I do them.

I have started my son “blessing his bed” which means making his bed but it becomes so much more lovely saying it that way.  I would like to be able to view my keeping of my home as blessing my home.  This comes to me via a friend who is doing the flylady system.  That system seems too advanced to me.  I am really, really stubborn about being told what to do this issue.

Disclaimer:  I don’ want anyone reading this to thing we live in a pit.  We have a very nice home but some areas are cluttered more than others, there is no system to when a floor, a toilet, a cupboard, or a room gets cleaned.  If I feel like it I do it; if not I don’t.  My system to date has been if it bothers you then you clean it.  Not really the blessing of a home as I would want it to be.

I’ve been running around the internet for the past hour and picked up the following ideas/information/etc.

  • playlist.com doesn’t look like it will work on WordPress
  • try using windex to clean the laminate floor
  • everyone seems happy David Cook won – as am I
  • there are alot of happy homeschooling moms out there
  • someone else likes to use glass for storing leftovers in and they use them for their pantry items which I just started yesterday!
  • there are alot of christian women blogging – love it
  • Ace Hardware is having what looks to be a good sale from the 23rd to the 26th – may have to go
  • the Reach flosser I ust bought an use is now available as a sample
  • another plug for using washclothes as napkins
  • more people are using cloth bags but I think I’m happier about it that they are; I didn’t realize how much I did not like those stupid plastic bags
  • a lot of folks seem to have homemaking binders; that just never seemed to work for me
  • I am going to start using a chore chart for Rob and I this summer with duties we can do together for each room
  • and finally, not everybody’s homes are picture perfect; I love the people who post real (before they clean up photos); that being said, I also love those picture perfect shots.

WhatWorksForMe is this website.  I have learned so much in my short time lurking on your site.  I look forward to Wednesdays in part because of you.  Thanks for providing the service and thanks to all the participants!  Now for a tip, when I cook scrambled eggs in my non stick pan they sometimes stick anyway.  To get the residue off, I put some water in the bottom of the pan, add a 1/4 teaspoon of dishwasher powder, put the pan on the stove at medium and let it heat up for a few minutes.  When I pour out the water, the egg residue wipes right off!  It works for me.

Create privacy – fake frosted glass August 23, 2007

www.grahambrown.com sells a film in a 27″ by 5′ roll that static clings to your window pane.  I currently am using vinyl that I bought for $2.00 at a sewing store.   I applied it with sprayed on windex (water would probably work too).  Saw this on an HGTV show.  Now I can take a shower in my bathroom and not worry that I’m flashing the neighbors.

I’ve had the vinyl up since August and in the past 3 months, some of it is starting to peel back so I’m either going to have to reapply it or look for a spray on product I read about somewhere and apply that.  For frugality sake, I believe I will remove and reapply.
